DIY: How to Survive the Economic Crisis

Finding yourself strapped for cash, stressed out, or worried about the future contents of your refrigerator? We here at SAFE believe that in the uncertain times of the current recession, turning to and sharing the thrifty and creative methods used in great-grandma's day will rebuild our community support networks. We have created a series of skillshares that will provide space to share ideas, learn, and have some fun! Our first workshop is:

Western Herbalism

Beer and Mead Making

Learn the basics for brewing your own beer and mead this Thursday, October 16 at 7pm.  Come to the Andres Castro Arms Co-op at 2310 Waring St. in Berkeley for this fun, interactive workshop.  Bring a large jar to take home some started mead.

Fermentation Skillshare with Sandor Katz

SAFE is pleased to announce a LIVE FERMENTATION presentation and workshop by Sandor Katz author of The Revolution Will Not Be Microwaved and Live Fermentation.

On November 29th Sandor will be coming to Berkeley to talk about fermentation and food culture. Come learn about the microbial ecology in your yogurt, sauerkraut and beer! Share in the delights of America’s underground food movements – learn about raw milk pirates, and illegal cooperatives that are springing up in every bioregion to serve the authentic foods we all secretly crave.

Attendees to this workshop will be able to take home a sourdough culture, kombucha culture, sauerkraut starter or other marvelous living foods.

Sustainabale Campus Foodsystems with John Jeavons

This meeting celebrated the launch of the “Greening Campus Cuisine Initiative” (GCCI pronounced ‘geekie’) a project of SAFE, STEAM and the CSSC. Featuring a talk by esteemed bio-intensive pioneer, John Jeavons author of How to Grow More Vegetables, now in its 6th edition, as he shares is latest research on low-energy agriculture. Other speakers include Tim Galarno, food systems activist at UC Santa Cruz, and Grace Voorheis of CAN ( Community Agroecology Network)- students can expect to learn about double digging, campus greening, and the national movement in institutional purchasing.
